How to Make an Online VideoAre you interested in making your own videos to upload to YouTube and other online video websites to share with the rest of the internet community? If you are and if this is your first time trying to do so, you may be wondering how you can go about making your own videos. Although the process of making a video for the likes of YouTube may seem like a complicated one, it isn’t necessarily. Even those with a low amount of computer knowledge are able to successfully make their own videos, many of which later end up on one of the online video sites like YouTube.

The first step in making an online video is to get a video recording device. Video recording devices come in a number of different formats. For instance, it is possible to use cell phones, webcams, or traditional camcorders. If you are interested in using your cell phone to help you make a YouTube video, you will need to make sure that your cell phone has video recording capabilities. You will find that most new, modern cell phones do. For the best quality videos, you want to use traditional camcorders, particularly digital ones, but webcams are also nice low-cost alternatives.

Once you have a video recording device in your possession, you can start to make your own videos. Popular videos on YouTube include video blogs, comedy skits, how-to videos, or travel videos. You can make just about whatever type of video you want, whether it is one that is staged or just recording spur of the moment activities or conversations. When making your video, it is important to remember that YouTube doesn’t limit the number of videos you can submit, but all videos must be ten minutes or less, if you have a traditional membership account. Therefore, if you want to have videos be longer than ten minutes, you either need to upgrade your account or make your videos in different segments.

When making your video for YouTube, you will want to make sure that the quality is good. For this, it is a good idea to speak directly into the camera or else use raised voices. This will help to ensure that those watching your videos on can actually understand what you are saying. It is also advised that you make sure the lighting is good. The best time to make movies is during the day. If you want to make your movies at night, whether they take place inside or outdoors, you will want to make sure that you have the appropriate amount of lighting. Nothing is worse that watching a video that is hard to see.

Although there are a number of steps, like the ones mentioned above, which you can take to ensure that your YouTube/Google/Vimeo videos etc are quality ones, there is a way that you can fix problems later on. You can do this with movie editing software. Moving editing software allows you to preview and edit your videos, should you wish to do so before uploading them. If you have a relatively new computer, you should be able to find movie editing software already on your computer. If you are unable to find movie editing software, you should be able to get free software programs or even purchase deluxe software programs online or from one of your local media stores.

The decision as to whether or not you want to edit your videos, before sharing them on YouTube, is yours to make, but it is advised that you at least look into doing so, especially if your computer already has a movie editing program. You will want to watch your movies and see if there is anything that you would like to edit, change, or remove. If so, the time to do it is before you post your video on the YouTube website. Editing your videos or at least previewing them first is likely to improve their quality, which, in turn, will help to improve the exposure that your online video gets. Many YouTube members share videos that they find interesting with those that they know and your videos may be one of them.

How to Make Viral Videos and Drive Traffic to Your Website

Posted in Make Viral Videos on 07.05.10 by Merlyn

It’s a fact of life: the weirder or funnier the video, the more hits it generates. The more hits it generates, the more it is palmed off to other Internet subscribers. The more people who see the video, the more hits it generates. It’s a win-win scenario that entails a bit of creativity, a bit of posting, a bit of word-of-mouth advertising and viola! You’ve got (what else?) a hit.

This is the theory that backs the promotion of viral videos on websites.

A viral video is really any video clip that spreads a virus on the Internet. It is usually passed on through blogs, emails, instant messages or other media sharing websites like YouTube. The most successful viral videos are the funnier, if not weirder amateur clips, although there are some noteworthy (and copyrighted) commercials, and excerpts from TV series and movies. Many online advertisers are now seeing the potential of the viral video phenomenon, and some of them are opting for this as a new marketing strategy.

Why? The answer is simple. Some videos are calling so much attention that they cross over to the more conventional arenas of the tri-media: the newspapers, radio and TV shows. It provokes a domino effect that gathers a lot of momentum with very little expended energy.

For the more hard-nosed net marketers, videos can be used to jack up traffic to a projected website, provided that it is done in connection with the products and services available on the website itself. Making them funny or weird is one way of making the video stand out among the thousands of new videos being uploaded on the Internet daily.

There are two ways of placing a video on your website. One: you take an already popular video and upload it to your page. Two: you create your own video and upload it to your page.

If you are opting for option number one, it might be best to judge first if the content of the video is even remotely associated with the theme of your website. If not, it would be best not to post it. That video can be downloaded from other sites, and you just as well may be getting more competition you can handle. Sure, it might generate traffic for some time, but is it quality traffic? And for how long will the interest hold out?

Besides, posting any video for the sake of posting something just might have a negative effect on you and your website. Site visitors might assume that you are as disorganized as your page and as a marketer, you would not want that.

The second way is to create your own video, which is more advisable if you are seriously considering the quality of traffic going through your site. It does not need to be a funny or weird video. The trend these days is leaning towards informative “how-to” videos. If your video or videos complements the other graphics, banners and articles of your site, you will not only have an increase in quality traffic, but an increase in the “expert-reputation” as well.

How to Make a Video Using Windows Movie Maker

Posted in Video Maker on 06.05.10 by Merlyn

One thing I like to do to professionalize my videos I record on my digital camera is that I like to use a free software called the Windows Movie Maker and this software actually comes with any PC, it is absolutely free. You will find it under your start menu. Windows Movie Maker is basically a free editing software that allows you to add titles, transition, credits and music.

The way that I use this system is that I take my raw video that I record on my canon digital camera and upload it straight up into Windows Movie Maker. Pretty much everybody has a digital camera, and most digital cameras these days have a video recording. Movie Maker tells you exactly how to do this, so I am going to walk you threw it. What you want to do is go to where it says capture video. Now you might have a webcam or you might have to import the video using a USB device, the cord that connects the computer to the camera. Then you want to click on import.

Now you are going to be able to edit it. What I like to do usually on the end of my videos I have, I like to add a title. The way I like to add a title is that I like to give them a call to action. You want to send them to your capture page or your blog etc. Some sort of call to action to go and do something.

When editing the video you want to get creative. You can get fancy with it and change the color and customize it. I like black background. Just make shore that it is easy to read. The worst thing you can do is create a call to action and the person would have to watch it like four times to be able to read it. You can make it bold so that they clearly are going to be able to see what you are trying to tell them.

I like to put music to this. We are not only here to educate people but we are also here to entertain them as well. And we want to make sense on all the different senses. And that might not only be digitally.
Now at the end of every video between the clip and the title I like to add a transition and this is to make it look a little better. There are different transitions here to choose from.

I also like to add low volume of music in my videos. I think it makes it more enjoyable to listen to. Or at the end you want some music to go with that. Just be creative with it.

If you just play with Movie Maker a little bit you get the hang of it. It is all pretty basic and intuitive stuff. Making videos is not a tech thing at all. It is just learning a few simple skill sets and you can start do video marketing which is a core marketing strategy. You can really not underestimate the power of video marketing.

Shooting Your Own Music Video

Posted in Make Music Videos on 05.05.10 by Merlyn

Music videos can be expensive items. It hurts spending thirty, fifty or even a hundred grand of your hard-earned money on something you – basically – give away for free!

So, it can be very tempting to save some money by shooting your own music video. I mean, video cameras come on cell phones nowadays, and HDTV is becoming less expensive. Cameras are everywhere. They’re ubiquitous. And, deep down, everyone really fancies themselves a director – sorry, an auteur, don’t they?…

So, should you consider going it alone and shooting your own music video?

The short answer: NO.

Directors, producers, cinematographers and production designers are all artisans. It takes years of study and work experience to become a decent film-maker. You wouldn’t leave your cd layout to some guy you passed on the street, would you? So why even consider doing something as important as your first music video all by yourself? It may look like simple work, but believe me, producing and directing ain’t easy!

Can you tell the difference between a lower budget independent movie and a Hollywood summer blockbuster? Of course you can! That’s exactly the difference between shooting the video yourself and hiring a professional. You don’t know how to make the movie look that glossy and perfect – but the professionals do! The best you could hope for is a decent indie flick. Sure, every once in a while a home-made music video comes along and does well. But, can you even think of one (and, no, Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” was NOT an indie video, the budget was actually massive). So, stick with the professionals. Let them do it all for you.

However, the single biggest reason I would dissuade you from shooting your own music video is probably not one you would have guessed:

Insurance!

Film crews often contain twenty, thirty, or even hundreds of people. There’s typically massive amounts of power being run through thick cables (often submerged in puddles) up to precariously hung lights with a virtual windmill of large, exposed, sharp metal edges (and all this at about 600 degrees celcius). A film set is literally an accident waiting to happen.

Plus, adding to the inherent dangers of a film set, music video shoots tend to be even more dangerous (music video productions don’t tend to have very much money for things like saftey experts and safety harnesses). Maverick directors love to put their subjects into harm’s way. And, on low-budget shoots, you can often hear things like: “We don’t need an expensive car-mount – let’s just throw the cameraman on the hood! Don’t worry, we’ll tie him down…”

So, if you do decide to shoot your video yourself, just make sure no one trips over a light stand! It could cost you your life savings.

Legitimate production companies will have production insurance that covers the workplace (this insurance would cost you around one or two thousand dollars – just for the one music video).

Professional producers and production managers will have access to much better crew members than you will. If you only have a thousand dollars to hire a director of photography (cinematographer), I guarantee you I’ll be able to hire a MUCH better DoP than you will! So, unless you have contacts in the industry, you should probably consider hiring a production company to do all the producing for you. You’ll get a much higher quality crew that way.

And, one final note…

If you’re shooting on 35mm film (which I strongly recommend – unless there’s a VERY good reason not to), you’ll need to rent a camera that’s worth around half a million bucks! And, that camera doesn’t come with any lenses (or tripods, or dollies, or film magazines, etc…). You’ll have to rent all that separately. So, unless you have a VERY high limit on your credit card, the camera house might not even be willing to rent to you. You might even have to mortgage your house to cover the deposit!

Established production companies rent camera packages all the time (a decent music video package will be at least one or two thousand dollars a day), and often receive significant discounts from the rental house that you wouldn’t be able to get. So, by going with an established production company, you’ll actually be getting a considerably better equipment package than if you had done it yourself (producers also know how to get film at about a quarter the price you’d be able to).

So, overall, you’ll get a much better bang-for-your-buck by hiring a professional producer or production company to shoot your music video for you. It will also save you an unbelievable amount of time and effort. And, in the end, isn’t that what you want for your first video: The abolute best music video possible?
